There are so many choices for pets – dogs, cats, house rabbits, birds, rodents, reptiles and even insects and spiders. Each of course has good and bad points, and you have to consider your personality as well as the pet’s. And of course, there are your personal likes and dislikes.

But for the majority of people, cats are the ideal pets. Here are 10 reasons why:

1. Cats Are A Perfect Size

Adult cats average 6-12 pounds,18-28 inches long and 10 inches tall. This makes cats ideal for apartments or travel, but also great for homes, especially if you have more than one.

If you fancy a smaller cat, Singapuras and Munchkins are considered the smallest breeds averaging 4-6 pounds. On the other hand, if you’d rather have a big cat, Maine Coons, Savannahs and Norwegian Forest Cats can weigh 25 pounds or more.

2. Cats Are Super Clean

Cats are one of the cleanest pets you can have. They are constantly washing themselves, and their fur has no odor. They use a litterbox religiously. You don’t have to bathe a cat. And brushing can be a mutually pleasing experience.

3. Cats Can Entertain Themselves

You can leave your cat home alone all day and he’ll entertain himself. Cats are independent enough that they won’t cry all day or bother the neighbors while you’re at work. They’ll find a sunny spot and mostly nap until you come home. If you have more than one, they will keep each other company in your absence.

4. Cats Do Well With Other Cats Or Other Pets

Unless a cat has had a bad experience with others, cats will peacefully coexist with other cats, and even other species such as dogs or house rabbits. They are not pack animals, so they don’t team up against others.

The only caveat is anything that might be considered prey to a cat – fish, birds, and the like. These may not be a good choice for a cat buddy. Except in rare circumstances, the cat will most likely consider them dinner!

5. Cats Are Very Smart

Cats are very aware of their world. They soon learn your household routines, for instance when food is served, or you sit down to relax for the night. It can be a two-edged sword though if you change your routine without consulting with your cat. It may take a while to renegotiate the routine!

Contrary to popular belief, cats can learn tricks, you just have to make it worth their while. Of course, this means that they teach us tricks too. You will soon find yourself turning on the water faucet or playing fetch with your cat. Yes, some cats play fetch as well as, or even better than, a dog!

6. Cats Are Very Affectionate

There’s no greater love than being loved by a cat. It’s so nice when you’re feeling sad, and that little one climbs in your lap and licks the tears away. Or when he just sits by your side purring, that gentle rumbling is so calming. They love to rub against you, and some even give kisses. When a cat shows you love, that’s true love.

7. Cats Are The Only Pets That Purr

Cats purr to communicate for food or show happiness and relaxation. They also purr if stressed or injured to soothe themselves. Studies have shown that purring occurs at 25Hz-50Hz, a low comforting vibration that can also be used for healing bones, wounds, and muscle strains!

While there are other animals that purr (some of the Big Cats as well as mongooses, raccoons and, believe it or not, turkeys), the purr of a cat is so comforting and soothing, especially when the cat is slitting her eyes and kneading her paws.

8. Cats Have Long Lives

Unlike many small pets or large dogs, cats can live to at least 15 years, and 20+ is not unheard of. So, you can have your companion for a long time through many years of your life. She can be your anchor, seeing you through both good and tough times.

9. Cats Make You Laugh

From kittens who roll, jump and play, to adults who love to play with string and catnip toys, cats are a lot of fun to play with and enjoy. They love to climb, and their ability to balance on the tiniest footholds is remarkable.

They really do land on their feet if they fall, unless there isn’t room to flip over, and they quickly recover from falls. If they do fall, the look on their faces that say “I meant to do that” is hilarious.

And if you have more than one cat, the games, chasing, and wrestling are so much fun! Nothing is cuter than watching a kitten playing with another cat’s tail! And speaking of catnip …

10. Cats Are The Only Animals That React To Catnip

Cats, both domestic and wild, are the only animals that react to catnip. Unlike human drugs, catnip is non-addictive and has no harmful effects. The most common reaction is rolling and chewing the catnip toy, tossing it into the air, attacking it, etc.

If you have multiple cats indulging at the same time, they start attacking and chewing on each other too (though not violently). Some run around like the Tasmanian Devil, others go leaping from place to place like Mexican jumping beans. They sleep it off afterwards and just chill out.

Only 60% of cats have The Gene that reacts to catnip, so consider yourself lucky if your cat(s) get “drunk”. For the best results, make sure you get catnip that’s clean, fresh and smells really strong.

And The List Goes On And On

Other wonderful features of cats are:

  • They are finicky and do not eat everything like some pets, so they don’t beg at the table.
  • They get rid of bugs and other pests.
  • They love empty boxes and can entertain themselves for hours with them.
  • They listen to your confidences and won’t spill your secrets to anyone else.
  • And there’s nothing better than snuggling with them as you go to sleep for the night.

Cats are just awesome little souls. Ready to check them out? Head to your local animal shelter and spend some time with the cats. You may find your perfect little companion there!
